Fuel Economy

Hi All, We bought an ex demo 500X 1.4 PopStar with some 2000 miles on the clock about 3 months ago. The mpg on the trip computer seemed quite low so we did the old fashioned method of run the tank down fill up and do the sums against the mileage. We did this 4 times and got one at 47mpg after a trip to London and an average of 28mpg for the cars normal use around Northampton town.
Not very pleased with this we took the car back to where we bought it and asked them to check it out amongst a few other little probs.
So this large motor company told use that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the car and it depended on road conditions and outside temperature to what mpg we would get! Their tests brought an average of 32mpg which seemed very low too.

What are you guys getting? I would appreciate if you'd let me know your mpg against your type of journey, ie town or motorway.

Apart from this we really love the car, its such a shame that this puts a dampener on it though.

Hi my best i have achieved is 7.2 litres per 100k on a 300km freeway run.
You can reset the consumption meter.
I was hoping for better consumption but the car performs well. 500x plus

My 1.4 Pop Star wasn't great on fuel either, largely unfortunately the issue with SUV's having the same aerodynamics as a garden shed....

I averaged 35-38mpg most weeks, mixed urban traffic stop/start and 70mph dual carriageway. Then about 43-45mg (if I was lucky) on a long motorway run.

This was in eco mode though, I rarely used Sport (and only used All Weather once).

Don't forget that the manufacturer claims are undertaken in a controlled, test environment - often with the engine outside of the vehicle on a test bed. Real world will always be different - usually worse occasionally better.

I think your fuel economy will improve as you get more miles on the clock. I was quite disappointed with the fuel economy when our 500X was new, but it has improved over time. It has now done 26,000 kms (16,000 miles) and last weekend we did about 650kms (about 400 miles) driving motorway Canberra to Sydney, around crowded Sydney roads and back home again. We got 39 mpg on the freeway and about 34 mpg around town (stop/start function was on). We have the 125kW (168 bhp), 250 Nm (184 ft lbs) version of the 1.4L petrol so I would expect it to use a bit more petrol.
