German specialist Eberspaecher plays a big part in reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the new Fiat 500X with its oxidizing catalytic converter. The unit is integrated into the NOx storage catalyst (NSC) technology that cuts output of the smog-causing pollutant by 60 percent to as low as 0.027g/km for gasoline engines and 0.052g/km in diesel powered variants thanks to a specific chemical formulation combined with sophisticated injection management software strategies.


The new crossover is available with both two-wheel- and four-wheel drive variants. A noteworthy feature of the model's four-wheel-drive configuration is the adoption of a rear axle disconnection system that reduces the amount of energy wasted through drag when four-wheel-drive operation is not required. The 500X and its sister model, the Jeep Renegade, are the only vehicles in the small SUV segment to offer this feature (the Fiat and Jeep brands are both part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). The rear-axle disconnect automatically switches between two- and four-wheel drive for accurate torque management with no need for input from the driver. The rear-drive module and power transfer unit are supplied by GKN Driveline, which also provides the 500X's electronic control unit, sideshafts and propshafts.
Fiat Chrysler-owned supplier Magneti Marelli provides a significant number of components to the 500X including the instrument cluster, which combines digital and analogue technology to display the distribution of traction over the two axles in addition to the vehicle speed, on-board computer and other driver information. Marelli also supplies the Fiat with both halogen and optional Xenon headlights. The 25-watt Xenon headlamps represent a development in lighting systems and offer an energy saving of about 30 percent compared with conventional 35-watt systems.
In addition, it means that weight can be saved as the model does not need a self-leveling system that is a legal requirement for 35-watt headlights. Among other components supplied by Marelli are the transmission control unit and hydraulic actuators for the DCT system, suspension systems and electronic engine control units for the 1.3-liter diesel as well as the 1.4-liter Multiair and 1.6-liter gasoline engines.
Assembly of the newest addition to the Fiat 500 family began in November 2014 at FCA's factory in Melfi, Italy, alongside the Renegade. The SUVs are both underpinned by FCA's small/SUSW platform. Output of the 500X is forecast to peak at more than 120,000 units next year, according to IHS Automotive.
